Establishment

The Governing Council of The Tanganyika Law Society is established under the provisions of Part IV of the Tanganyika Law Society Act of 1961 as amended (Now Cap. 307 Revised Edition 2002).

Under the Act the Governing Council is established for the purposes of proper management of the affairs of the Society.

Constitution of the Governing Council

The Governing Council of the Tanganyika Law Society is composed of the President, a Vice-President, a Treasurer and seven other members elected in the Annual General Meeting of the Society.

Election of the Governing Council

The Governing Council is elected annually by the Society in a general meeting.

RULES OF THE COUNCIL

1. There shall be a minimum of six ordinary meetings each year, on dates to be determined by the Council.  The President shall have power to alter any date on which a meeting is to be held. 

2. A special meting of the Council may be called by the President or any three members of the Council.  The Agenda of any special meeting shall be determined by the President and/or the person of persons calling such meeting. 

3. The President shall chair all Council meetings, or in his absence the Vice President or in his absence any member of the Council chosen by the Council in that behalf. 

4. The Quorum for a meeting of the Council shall be half the total number of the members of the Council.

5.        
 i). Notice of the meeting of the Council, except for an adjourned meeting shall be given to all council members for t least three days, unless the President deems it fit to call a meeting on shorten notice.

 ii) Except in a case of urgency determined as such by the President no motion shall be moved at any Council meeting unless three days notice thereof has given in Agenda.

6. Unless otherwise provided by the Ordinance, all matters shall be decided by a majority off the members present and voting the president shall in the event of a tie, have a casting vote.
